Trump refuses to back Ukraine at UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The conservative-leaning Wall Street Journal Editorial Board has delivered a scathing rebuke of the Trump administration’s latest foreign policy move—voting against a United Nations resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In a dramatic shift, the United States aligned itself with Vladimir Putin, joining a small group of global outcasts who opposed the measure. The UN General Assembly resolution—which called for Russia’s immediate withdrawal from Ukraine—was supported by 93 countries, including many of America’s closest allies.

But Trump’s U.S. government voted no.

And for the Wall Street Journal’s editorial board, that was a step too far.

A ‘Regrettable Moment’ in U.S. Foreign Policy

The Journal, which has often backed Trump’s policies, didn’t hold back in its blistering critique:

What a regrettable moment,” the board wrote.

It pointed out that the resolution wasn’t even particularly aggressive, merely stating that Russia’s invasion had ‘devastating and long-lasting consequences’ and calling for an ‘early cessation of hostilities.’

“Apparently even this was too much of a rebuke to Vladimir Putin for President Trump to tolerate,” the editorial board added.

For years, the U.S. had consistently supported resolutions condemning Russia’s aggression. But now? Trump’s White House is siding with ‘the world’s rogues’ instead of its allies.

Reagan Wouldn’t Have Done This

The Journal made a powerful comparison to Ronald Reagan, a conservative icon known for his tough stance against Russia.

“The truth was an essential weapon in defeating what Reagan called an ‘evil empire,’” the board reminded readers.

By contrast, Trump’s refusal to even acknowledge Russia as the aggressor sends a troubling message—not just to Ukraine, but to America’s NATO partners and European allies.

Macron Moves Forward, But Can He Trust Trump?

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested that Europe could deploy peacekeeping troops to Ukraine—but only if the U.S. provides guarantees of support.

Trump, however, has given no such promise.

The Journal warned that without clear U.S. backing, confidence in any negotiated peace deal is severely undermined.

“It’s hard to be optimistic if he won’t tell the truth about which country started the war,” the editorial board concluded.

What Does This Mean?

  • Trump’s shift toward Russia is becoming impossible to ignore—even for conservative voices like the Wall Street Journal.
  • America’s global credibility is at risk if it abandons long-standing alliances.
  • European leaders like Macron are moving ahead on Ukraine—but they don’t know if they can count on Trump.

With Russia’s war still raging, the White House’s next moves will determine America’s role on the global stage—and whether its allies can still trust it to stand for democracy.
