Donald Trump and Elon Musk might appear like close allies today, but their first meeting in the Oval Office back in 2020 was anything but friendly.
In fact, things got awkward—and quickly.
“He Called Him a What?”
In a stunning revelation by Politico, a source present at their first meeting shared how Musk privately insulted Trump, calling him a “f—— moron” behind his back—right inside the White House.
And that was just the beginning.
According to Politico’s Adam Wren, Musk arrived at the Oval Office intending to discuss plans for a new Tesla gigafactory—not in Texas, but in Mexico. Before the meeting, Musk had even met privately with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, trying to smooth out the details.
But once Musk entered the Oval Office, things took a sharp turn.
White House vs. China’s Palaces
A source who overheard Musk’s comments said the billionaire entrepreneur immediately insulted Trump’s pride and joy—the White House itself.
“He looks around the Oval Office and says, ‘Gosh, I tell you, I was just in China, and their palaces make the White House look more like an outhouse,’” the source recalled.
Trump was reportedly furious, quietly “fuming” at Musk’s blunt criticism of America’s iconic presidential home.
A Complicated Partnership: From Tension to Transactions
Despite this rocky start, Trump and Musk have gradually grown closer over the years, driven mainly by mutual benefits rather than friendship.
Wren describes their relationship as purely transactional—each using the other’s influence to their own advantage. Musk’s shift from initially meeting Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, to eventually dealing directly with Trump shows how their relationship evolved strategically.
The Rise, Fall, and Rise Again of Trump and Musk
While Musk and Trump seem cordial now, their relationship has seen plenty of ups and downs. In 2022, Musk openly suggested that Trump retire from politics, tweeting, “I don’t hate the man, but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat & sail into the sunset.”
Trump, never one to shy away from a fight, shot back with a fiery post on his Truth Social platform. Posting a picture of himself in the Oval Office with Musk standing beside him, Trump suggested Musk would have willingly begged him on his knees, just to win his favor.
Yet, despite their past tensions, Trump and Musk now appear to be allies, united by mutual interests—at least publicly.
A Rocky Friendship with High Stakes
Five years later, Trump and Musk seem friendly enough publicly, but their history tells a deeper story. Musk, who once openly opposed Trump’s policies—including his stance on climate and energy issues—now finds himself closely advising the Trump administration.
Musk famously opposed Trump’s policies back in 2017, even quitting Trump’s advisory councils over climate change disagreements. He publicly criticized Trump again in 2022, suggesting it was time for Trump to retire from politics.
“I don’t hate the man,” Musk tweeted in 2022, “but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat and sail into the sunset.”
Yet today, their past tensions appear forgotten—at least on the surface—as Trump and Musk stand side by side, pushing controversial tax cuts benefiting billionaires and corporations.
