President Donald Trump’s dramatic turn on Ukraine has sent shockwaves through Washington and America’s allies—and according to Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), it has left the U.S. looking weaker than ever on the world stage.
In a blistering CNN interview with Anderson Cooper, Kelly slammed Trump’s erratic foreign policy decisions, warning that his embrace of Russia is a direct threat to national security.
“You know that after 80 years, in a few days, Donald Trump just blew up the Western Alliance. I mean, completely,” Kelly said. “Even after this first month of this administration, I’m still kind of shocked by what happened over the last several days.”
And the consequences? “This makes our country look weak, and we are less safe because of it.”
Trump’s UN Vote Sparks Outrage
Kelly’s remarks came after Trump sided with Russia at the United Nations, opposing a resolution condemning Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The vote put the U.S. in alignment with authoritarian regimes, rather than its traditional allies.
For Kelly, the message couldn’t be clearer:
“I think he knows where he wants to be—he wants to be aligned with Putin. He seems to be drawn to dictators, and this is dangerous for our country.”
And while Trump’s stance on Russia has long been controversial, this was a major escalation—one that left even seasoned foreign policy experts stunned.
Defense Secretary’s Weak Response Raises Eyebrows
Kelly didn’t just go after Trump—he also took aim at Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who downplayed the situation by calling it “complicated.”
Kelly’s response? It’s not complicated at all.
“It’s very clear who the aggressor is, it’s clear who the war criminal is,” he said bluntly, referring to Putin’s ongoing war crimes in Ukraine.
But the Arizona senator quickly circled back to the bigger issue—Trump’s dangerous admiration for authoritarian leaders.
“If we get into the habit of aligning with violent dictators—people like Vladimir Putin—we’re putting ourselves in a situation we haven’t been in for nearly a century.”
Kelly Rips Trump’s ‘Bad Deal-Making’
In one of the most devastating lines of the interview, Kelly took a direct shot at Trump’s negotiation skills, using Trump’s own book against him.
Referencing the 1987 bestseller “Trump: The Art of the Deal,” Kelly mocked Trump’s approach to Ukraine:
“They’re in a negotiation, and right at the start, they give up the two biggest negotiating points: NATO membership and Ukrainian land.”
Then, with a smirk, Kelly added:
“I thought the president was supposed to be good at making a deal—this is like the art of the bad deal.”
