New Polls Show Americans Reject Musk—Will Trump Cut Him Loose?

The once-powerful alliance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk may be heading for troubled waters—and if the latest polls are correct, Musk could become a major liability for the Trump administration.

According to CNN’s data expert Harry Enten, Americans—regardless of party affiliation—are turning against Musk.

“If there’s one person that they really don’t like in the Trump administration, it’s Elon Musk,” Enten said Tuesday. He pointed out that 54% of registered voters disapprove of Musk’s actions as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—a troubling number for someone so closely tied to the administration.

Even worse? Musk’s unpopularity is growing fast.

Musk’s Popularity Is Plummeting—Fast

Enten revealed a stunning drop in Musk’s approval ratings over the past two months.

  • In December 2024, Musk’s net favorability was at minus five pointsnot great, but manageable.
  • By February 2025, that number plummeted to minus 12 points.

“Way, way, way underwater,” Enten emphasized. “You need a scuba diver to get as far underwater as Elon Musk is at this particular point.”

His biggest problem? Americans simply don’t trust him.

Musk’s controversial email demanding federal employees justify their jobs or face termination has fueled public backlash, further damaging his image. Many now see him as reckless, power-hungry, and unpredictable.

One Small Silver Lining for Musk

Despite the overwhelming negativity, Enten pointed out one glimmer of hope:

  • 42% of voters believe Musk is cutting wasteful government spending.
  • Only 36% are worried that he’s slashing essential programs.

This suggests that while many dislike Musk personally, some still support his cost-cutting efforts—if they believe it’s targeting government inefficiency rather than essential services.

The 20% That Could Decide Musk’s Fate

Enten highlighted a key swing group that could make or break Musk’s future in the Trump administration:

  • 20% of voters are unsure about Musk.
  • They don’t like him, but they aren’t sure what he’s cutting.
  • They view him as “a flaky individual” and don’t trust his judgment.

This indecisive 20% could ultimately determine whether Musk remains a central figure in Trump’s White House—or becomes a political liability too big to ignore.

Is Trump’s Patience Wearing Thin?

With Trump laser-focused on 2025’s policy battles and re-election strategies, Musk’s free-falling approval ratings could soon become a problem he no longer wants to deal with.

  • Will Trump eventually distance himself from Musk to save his own popularity?
  • Or will he double down on their partnership, despite the growing backlash?

One thing is certain: If Musk’s approval keeps sinking, Trump may be forced to decide—stick with Musk or cut him loose before he drags the whole administration down.
